What Is Projection?
How the people who bother you can teach you about yourself.
Part of the Explore Depth Psychology Series
Projection happens when we see what we haven’t claimed in ourselves in others. Whether it's judgment or admiration, these reactions are signals, pointing toward disowned parts of us. Working with our Shadow helps us recognise projection not as a flaw, but as a mirror: showing us what we’re ready to reclaim.
What Is Psychological Projection?
Have you ever felt a sudden surge of judgment toward someone?
Maybe it was their arrogance. Or how needy they seemed.
Maybe they reminded you of something you can’t stand or secretly wish you had.
That might be projection.
In Depth Psychology, projection means seeing parts of yourself in someone else, without realising it.
Let’s unpack that.
What Exactly Is Projection?
When you project, you unconsciously disown a part of yourself and see it “out there” in others.
For example:
If you’ve buried your ambition, you might resent people who seem power-hungry.
If you’re ashamed of your sensitivity, you might roll your eyes at “overly emotional” people.
If you’ve never claimed your creativity, you might idolise artists, but never believe you could do that.
Projection isn’t wrong.
It’s human.
But when we don’t recognise it, it keeps us stuck, blaming others for what’s unclaimed in us.
Where Does Projection Come From?
Usually from early survival.
As kids, we learn which parts of ourselves are “safe” to show and which get us rejected, shamed, or punished.
So we exile those parts.
They don’t go away. They go underground.
And over time, they show up … in our judgments.
Projection is how your unconscious tries to show you what you’ve disowned so that you can reclaim it.
How to Work With Projection
Here’s a quick reflection you can try:
1. Name the charge.
Who’s bugging you right now? What’s your most decisive judgment?
2. Flip the lens.
Ask: Where does this quality live in me - repressed, denied, or feared?
3. Meet the shadow.
No shame here. Just curiosity. You might need more of that trait (in healthy form).
4. Integrate.
Can you hold that trait with awareness? Can you choose how to express it, instead of being run by it?
Projection Can Be Gold, Too
Projection isn’t just about what we hate.
We also admire it, but don’t believe we can be.
If you’re mesmerised by someone’s confidence, creativity, or wisdom … chances are, that lives in you too.
We call this the ‘Golden Shadow’.
It’s just as essential to reclaim your anger or fear.
Final Thought
Next time someone gets under your skin, pause.
Ask: Is this about them? Or about a part of me I’ve hidden?
Projection doesn’t mean the other person’s off the hook.
It just means you’re ready to take back your power.
That’s Shadow Self Discovery.
That’s Depth Psychology.
And that’s the path to becoming more whole.
