How to Begin ‘Shadow Work’

A practical introduction to Self-discovery through the Shadow

Part of the ‘Shadow Work’ Basics Series

A gentle, practical guide to starting ‘Shadow Work’ with simple daily practices, emotional awareness, and journaling prompts that help you build compassion for your hidden Self.

If you’re new to working with your Shadow, start here. You don’t need deep psychological training - just curiosity, self-honesty, and a gentle willingness to look within.

Start Where You Are

You’re not here to become someone else. You’re here to become more fully you. Working with your Shadow begins when you notice what triggers you - and stay present long enough to ask why.

Simple Daily Practice

You can begin today with just five minutes:

  1. Track Your Triggers
What made you angry, anxious, or reactive today?
    Write it down without judgment.

  2. Name Your Judgments
Who did you mentally criticise today? What trait did you dislike?
Ask: “What might this say about something I disown in myself?”

  3. Breathe Into the Reaction
Instead of distracting or fixing, pause. Place a hand on your body and stay with the feeling for 30 seconds.

  4. Journal Prompt:
“What part of me still feels unacceptable - even to me?”

Try a Small Reframe

Instead of “What’s wrong with me?” ask: “What’s this part trying to do for me?”

Often, Shadow parts are trying to protect us - just in outdated ways.

What Comes Next

As you build awareness, the journey deepens:

  • Explore projection, inner critics, and archetypes

  • Use prompts, pair work, or facilitator support

  • Consider joining a group or using guided visualisations

You don’t need to go fast. Just go consciously.

Takeaway

Start with awareness. Add compassion. And return - again and again - to the parts of yourself that once felt too much.

That’s ‘Shadow Work’.
